Fake ‘kid in a kit’ excuses workers for leaving early

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Scary or what? That wonderful website Springwise (daily fixes of entrepreneurial ideas) reports the US business that provides you with a fake child.

Why? So that you can get the same perks as parents i.e having to leave work early on certain occasions. Neat idea but can it also, in the spirit of the fairness it seeks, deliver sleepless nights and the occasional stress of a real child? I doubt it. Read more at springwise.com

Catchy phrases

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

I was listening to Radio 4 this morning and there was an interesting item about how our children are brought up.

The aggressive pursuit of personal success by adults is now the greatest threat to British children, a major independent report on childhood says.

The report, called The Good Childhood Inquiry and commissioned by the Children’s Society, concludes that children’s lives in Britain have become “more difficult than in the past”, adding that “more young people are anxious and troubled”.

According to the panel, “excessive individualism” is to blame for many of the problems children face and needs to be replaced by a value system where people seek satisfaction more from helping others rather than pursuing private advantage.

My point of raising it here is the effect that a good interviewee can have with well chosen words. It is rare that I remember exact phrases hours after the event. But this morning a man used these three phrses in his responses:

1. The third parent, the television.
2. Day orphanages (meaning nurseries).
3. Confusing pleasure with happiness.

All of them are short and snappy but carry a bit of an emotional message. A very effective technique if you want to get people to understand your message.

On a personal note, it got me thinking: our television is not a replacemenent parent; the nursery we used to use was an introduction to all manner of great things; aren’t pleasure and happiness often the same thing?

Children elope

girl-wearing-sunglassesMy favourite news story today was about the two children, aged six and seven, who set off to get married. They set off from Hannover, Germany on New Year’s Eve, determined to tie the knot under the African sun.

Waiting for a train to the airport, they aroused the attention of a guard who contacted police, possibly as their packing had included the essentials of sunglasses, a lilo, summer clothes and provisions.

Children keep right…please

Imaginarium, Barcelona

Imaginarium, Madrid

You get odd looks taking photos of children’s toy shops but that didn’t stop me.

The shop is Imaginarium at Madrid airport. I really liked the visual effect of the doors; one for adults, one for children.

The thing is that most children seemed to go through the left door, the adult one, even when parents pushed them towards the small entrance.

My guess is that the width is the inviting factor. Also the merchandising and store layout suggest the larger door is the correct one.
