Market Mogul: Building Your Marketing Empire One Client at a Time

Market Mogul

Today, I’m thrilled to share with you a concept that has been brewing in my mind for quite some time. If you’re a fan of board games like Monopoly and have a knack for marketing, then you’re in for a treat. I present to you “Market Mogul,” a board game designed to simulate the exhilarating world of marketing. This game is not just about rolling dice and moving pieces; it’s about strategy, negotiation, and building your very own marketing empire. Let’s look at the nitty-gritty of how this game works, the rules of play, and how you can emerge victorious.

The Concept of Market Mogul

Market Mogul is a board game that captures the essence of the marketing industry. The game is designed for 2 to 6 players, and the objective is simple: build the most successful marketing empire by acquiring clients, managing suppliers, navigating statutory costs, and paying taxes. The player with the highest net worth at the end of the game wins.

The board is a square, much like Monopoly, with spaces arranged around the perimeter. Players use dice to move their pieces around the board, landing on different spaces that represent clients, suppliers, statutory costs, and taxes. Each space offers a unique opportunity or challenge, making every turn an exciting experience.

Setting Up the Game

To start, each player chooses a token and places it in the Headquarters (Go) space. Everyone begins with a set amount of capital, say £1,500. The Market Research and Strategy Session cards are shuffled and placed in their respective spaces on the board. Once everything is set up, the game begins with each player taking turns to roll the dice and move their token.

Navigating the Board

As you move around the board, you’ll encounter various spaces that represent different aspects of the marketing world. Here’s a breakdown of what each type of space entails:

Clients

Clients are the lifeblood of your marketing empire. When you land on a client space, you have the option to purchase that client if it’s unowned. If another player owns the client, you’ll need to pay them a service fee. The clients range from small startups to global corporations, each offering different levels of revenue.

Suppliers

Suppliers provide the services you need to support your clients. These include printing services, digital ad agencies, market research firms, social media influencers, event management companies, and creative studios. Just like clients, you can purchase suppliers when you land on their spaces or pay service fees if they are owned by another player.

Statutory Costs and Taxes

No business can escape the clutches of statutory costs and taxes. These spaces require you to pay a specified amount to the bank. It’s a reminder that even in the world of marketing, you need to stay compliant with regulations and manage your finances wisely.

Special Spaces

The board also features special spaces like Market Research (Chance), Strategy Session (Community Chest), Tax Audit (Income Tax), Regulatory Compliance (Luxury Tax), Networking Event (Free Parking), and Crisis Management (Jail). These spaces add an element of unpredictability to the game, keeping you on your toes.

The Rules of Play

Now that we have an overview of the board, let’s talk about the rules of play. The game is designed to be engaging and strategic, with each turn offering new opportunities and challenges.

Taking Turns

Players take turns rolling two dice and moving their tokens to the corresponding number of spaces. Depending on the space you land on, you’ll have different actions to take. If you land on a client or supplier space, you can choose to purchase it if it’s unowned. If it’s owned by another player, you’ll need to pay them a service fee.

Managing Clients and Suppliers

Acquiring clients and suppliers is crucial to building your marketing empire. When you land on a client or supplier space, you can purchase it by paying the bank the specified amount. Once you own a client or supplier, you can collect service fees from other players who land in that space. You can also invest in your clients and suppliers to increase the service fees you collect.

Navigating Special Spaces

Special spaces add an element of unpredictability to the game. When you land on a Market Research or Strategy Session space, you’ll draw a card and follow the instructions. These cards can offer rewards or penalties, such as collecting money, paying fines, or moving to different spaces on the board.

Crisis Management (Jail)

If you land on the Marketing Scandal space, you’ll need to move directly to Crisis Management (Jail). You can get out of Crisis Management by rolling doubles, using a “Get Out of Jail Free” card or paying a fine of £50.

Winning the Game

The game ends when a predetermined number of rounds are completed or when only one player remains solvent. The player with the highest net worth, which includes cash and the value of their clients and suppliers, wins the game. It’s a test of strategy, negotiation, and financial management.

Special Cards

The Market Research (Chance) and Strategy Session (Community Chest) cards add an extra layer of excitement to the game. These cards can offer rewards or penalties, making each turn unpredictable.

Market Research (Chance) Cards

  • “Your campaign goes viral! Collect £200.”
  • “Client demands a refund. Pay £100.”
  • “Win an industry award. Move to the nearest Client space.”
  • “Market trend shifts. Move back three spaces.”

Strategy Session (Community Chest) Cards

  • “Successful pitch! Collect £150.”
  • “Supplier delays. Pay £50.”
  • “Attend a marketing conference. Advance to Networking Event.”
  • “New regulations. Pay £100.”
