I was listening to my music on Spotify this morning and tripped over an old favourite, “Lead Singer Syndrome” by Hello Wembley.
It got me thinking about the title and its relevance to business. A little research, and here is the definition of lead singer syndrome:
Definition
Lead singer syndrome (also called Lead Singer Disease or LSS) is an informal term describing a pattern where a band’s lead vocalist develops an inflated ego, becomes difficult to work with, and starts acting entitled or superior to other band members.
Typical Symptoms
- Acting entitled and ungrateful
- Believing they are the most important or talented person in the band
- Demanding special treatment or making unreasonable requests
- Isolating themselves from other band members
- Treating others poorly or disrespectfully
Impact
This behaviour often leads to tension within the band, can cause members to leave, and is sometimes blamed for band breakups. The syndrome is most commonly associated with lead singers due to their visibility and the attention they receive, but it can affect other prominent members as well.
Lead Singer Syndrome in Business
Where do you see lead singer syndrome in your business life? I can think of a name or two, but it would be inappropriate to mention them here. It’s worth noting that there seems to be a trend for them to move to a solo career with heavy repetition of their old material.
