Ann Handley, the Godmother of Marketing

Godmother of Marketing

In 2023 I wrote about the Godfather of Marketing. It got me thinking about the Godmother of Marketing, Ann Handley. She may not be as well known as Philip Kotler, but she deserves acknowledgemement for significant contribution to marketing.[1][2]

Ann Handley Godmother of Marketing. The moniker fits because so much of modern content marketing carries Ann’s fingerprints, even if her name does not always get top billing.[1][3]

Why Ann Handley is the Godmother of Marketing

Ann Handley Godmother of Marketing is not a formal title, of course. It reflects how many marketers see her role in shaping content marketing as a discipline in its own right.[1][3] She made the case early that content is not a side project, but the beating heart of how brands communicate.

Ann became known worldwide as a pioneer in online publishing when she co-founded ClickZ, one of the first dedicated digital marketing news and commentary sites, at a time when “online marketing” still sounded experimental.[4][3] That early work set her up to lead as Chief Content Officer at MarketingProfs, a global marketing education company with hundreds of thousands of subscribers who look to her for practical, grounded advice.[4][2]

Everybody Writes and the craft of content

For many marketers, the gateway to Ann’s thinking is her book Everybody Writes, which sets out to turn anxious, hesitant writers into confident communicators.[5][6] Rather than treat writing as a mysterious talent, she frames it as a learnable skill with tools, habits and processes that anyone in marketing can apply.

The updated edition of Everybody Writes doubles down on clarity, empathy and usefulness, positioning great writing as the most scalable marketing tool you own.[5][6] She emphasises that strong content blends utility, inspiration and empathy, an equation that helps teams move from “filling channels” to actually helping their audience.[5][6]

MarketingProfs and the rise of content education

Ann’s role at MarketingProfs has been central to how B2B marketers, in particular, have learned to think about content over the last two decades.[4][7] As Chief Content Officer, she has helped shape training, events and resources that focus on practical ways to escape bland, forgettable marketing.

The annual MarketingProfs B2B Forum has become a flagship event for marketers who care about strategy and execution in equal measure.[7][2] Under Ann’s influence, it has championed ideas like customer empathy, long term relationship-building and human, conversational brand voices that do not sound like corporate boilerplate.[7][2]

Ann Handley’s influence on modern marketers

Ann is often described as one of the most influential women in digital and social media, and that influence shows up in how many marketers quote her in internal playbooks and content guidelines.[4][1] She has used platforms like LinkedIn and keynote stages worldwide to push marketers towards work that is more honest, more thoughtful and frankly more enjoyable to read.[4][1]

Her own story, from creating a local neighbourhood newsletter as a kid to becoming a global content leader, gives marketers permission to think of themselves as publishers rather than campaign machines.[2][3] That mindset shift is one reason why “Ann Handley Godmother of Marketing” feels so fitting for those of us who build our businesses on words, ideas and relationships.[1][3]
