Is B2B Marketing Going Digital as Quickly as B2C?

Is B2B Marketing Going Digital as Quickly as B2C?

In recent years, we’ve seen a significant shift in the marketing landscape. As a marketer, I’ve witnessed firsthand the rapid digitalisation of B2C marketing. But what about B2B? Is it keeping pace with its consumer-focused counterpart? Let’s explore this intriguing question and uncover the trends shaping B2B marketing in 2024.

The Digital Revolution in B2B Marketing

The Convergence of B2B and B2C Strategies

It’s fascinating to see how B2B marketing is increasingly adopting strategies that were once the domain of B2C. This convergence is driven by changing customer expectations and the need for more personalised, engaging experiences[1][3].

Embracing Digital Platforms

B2B companies are recognising the power of digital platforms. A staggering 90% of B2B firms plan to increase their use of digital marketplaces[7]. This shift mirrors the B2C world, where online platforms have long been the norm.

The Rise of Mobile-Friendly Design

With 34% of B2C marketers focusing on mobile-friendly website design, B2B isn’t far behind[2]. The importance of catering to on-the-go professionals can’t be overstated in today’s fast-paced business environment.

Key Trends Driving B2B Digital Marketing

AI and Personalisation

Artificial Intelligence is revolutionising B2B marketing. It’s enabling unprecedented levels of personalisation, with 93% of B2B executives planning to increase their investment in generative AI within the next year[5].

Content Marketing and Storytelling

Content marketing remains a cornerstone of B2B strategies. The focus is shifting towards authentic storytelling that resonates with the target audience, much like in B2C marketing[1].

Influencer Marketing in B2B

Surprisingly, influencer marketing isn’t just for consumer brands anymore. Three-quarters of B2B marketers are currently utilising influencers, with 93% of CMOs planning to increase this engagement[5].

The Pace of Digital Adoption in B2B vs B2C

Speed of Transformation

While B2B is certainly embracing digital marketing, the pace of adoption is generally slower compared to B2C. This is partly due to the complex nature of B2B sales cycles and decision-making processes[3].

Hybrid Approaches

B2B is moving towards a hybrid model, combining digital and traditional methods. B2B buyers now spend about two-thirds of their time engaging with suppliers online, with the remaining third through traditional channels[5].

Challenges in B2B Digital Adoption

The transition to digital in B2B faces unique challenges. For instance, only 47% of SaaS licenses are actively used, indicating potential issues with technology integration and adoption[5].

The Future of B2B Marketing

Omnichannel Integration

The future of B2B marketing lies in creating seamless experiences across all channels. This approach, common in B2C, is becoming increasingly crucial for B2B success[6].

Data-Driven Decision Making

Like their B2C counterparts, B2B marketers are leveraging data analytics to inform their strategies and personalise customer experiences[1].

Focus on Customer Experience

B2B companies are realising the importance of customer experience, a lesson long understood in the B2C world. This shift is driving investments in user-friendly interfaces and self-service portals[7].

As we look at these trends, it’s clear that B2B marketing is indeed going digital, albeit at a different pace and with unique considerations compared to B2C. The lines between B2B and B2C marketing are blurring, with B2B adopting many successful B2C strategies.

However, it’s important to remember that B2B marketing still has its own distinct characteristics. The longer sales cycles, complex decision-making processes, and the need for deep industry expertise mean that while B2B is embracing digital, it’s doing so in a way that’s tailored to its specific needs.

As we move further into 2024, I expect we’ll see even more convergence between B2B and B2C marketing strategies. The key for B2B marketers will be to strike the right balance between digital innovation and the traditional relationship-building that has long been the cornerstone of B2B success.

In this evolving landscape, staying informed and adaptable is crucial. Whether you’re in B2B or B2C, the digital revolution in marketing is here to stay, and it’s transforming the way we connect with our customers.

Is this difference driven by the types of people that enter B2C marketing?

  2. I don’t think so, Chris.

Digital B2C got a much earlier lead than B2B. A lot of the Dotcom late 90s activity was around consumer business. At that time I was at BBC Worldwide and we have the BBC Online shop which was delivering strong results, but way behind that of Amazon (then just an online bookshop).

B2B has followed in the wake of B2C. One of the challenges in B2B marketing has been the experience and size of marketing teams; their priorities (often with tight budgets) have been elsewhere, and still is. Look at this list of marketing functions that should be considered.
